What Arizona Does to Asphalt Shingle
- A shingle rated for 30 years was tested under conditions that don’t exist here. Asphalt shingle ages by losing volatile oils from the asphalt binder. Heat drives that process, UV accelerates it, and Phoenix delivers both at close to the highest levels in the country. Roof surface temperatures on a dark shingle roof regularly exceed 160°F in summer.
- Plan on 15 to 22 years for architectural shingle in the Valley : and toward the higher end of that only with adequate attic ventilation. A poorly ventilated attic cooks the shingle from underneath as well as above, and it’s the single biggest factor separating a roof that makes 20 years from one that makes 12.
- Higher elevation markets like Prescott and Payson are easier on shingle — cooler summers, less intense UV — and it’s a more common choice there for that reason, along with better performance under snow load than tile.
Our Replacement Process
On-site measurement and inspection. Roof measured, deck assessed, ventilation evaluated, existing conditions photographed. No phone quotes.
Written proposal. Shingle line and color, underlayment specification, ventilation work if needed, and a deck repair allowance.
Permitting. Pulled by us, included in scope.
Tear-off to bare deck. Old shingles and underlayment removed completely. We don’t do overlays.
Deck inspection and repair. Every square foot checked. Rotted or delaminated sheathing replaced.
Underlayment and detailing. Synthetic underlayment across the field, self-adhered membrane in valleys and at eaves, new drip edge on all edges, new pipe flashings and step flashing. Flashings are always new.
Starter course, field shingles, and hip and ridge cap installed to manufacturer nailing specification — correct fastener placement and count is what keeps the wind warranty valid.
Ventilation. Ridge vent or upgraded static ventilation where the attic is undersized for airflow.
Cleanup, magnetic nail sweep, final walkthrough, and warranty documents.

Shingle makes sense when
budget is the deciding factor, the roof has a moderate to steep pitch, you’re at higher elevation, or you’re matching surrounding homes in an HOA that requires it.
Consider tile instead when
you plan to stay in the home long term. Tile costs meaningfully more up front but the material lasts 50+ years — you replace underlayment periodically rather than the whole roof. Over thirty years the math usually favors tile in this climate.
Consider foam or metal when
you have flat or low-slope sections, or an outbuilding where longevity matters more than appearance.
